Abstract
872,593. Sewing machines. TRENT MACHINE CO. Ltd., and TWIST, G. V. July 29, 1957 [July 30, 1956], No. 23515/56. Class 112 A sewing machine comprising a lower worksupporting platform is mounted within a boxshaped base having a fixed plane upper surface extending inwardly of at least one edge of the box and constituting a supplementary sewing platform, and coupling means between the base and sewing machine permit movement of the latter from a first position in which said platforms are flush with each other for supporting flat work material, to a second position in which the sewing machine platform is raised above the supplementary platform to constitute a free arm for sewing tubular material. As shown, a box-shaped base 1 has an upper surface 9 normally flush with the work-supporting surface 12 of a sewing machine 3. The sewing machine is connected to the base by parallel, pivotal links 21, 22, and is counterbalanced by springs 38. An arm 43, pivoted to the base, is biased by a spring 46 against a curved surface 15 on the sewing machine. The latter is retained in the lowered position by a nose 60 on one arm of a bell crank lever 57 pivoted at 60 to the base, entering an aperture 51 in the sewing machine. A button 63, connected by a rod 62 to the other arm of lever 57, when depressed releases nose 60, when spring 46 effects initial upward movement of the sewing machine, the latter being so retained in the raised position by nose 60 entering a second aperture 52. When button 63 is subsequently depressed to release nose 60, spring 46, which has been re-stressed by engagement of arm 43 with a fixed stop 50, will initiate downward movement of the sewing machine. A hinged cap 16 at the free end of the work-support 12 provides access to the stitch forming mechanism mounted under the latter. It is stated that the sewing machine may be pivotally mounted as described in Specification 787,234 to tilt upwardly through an angle of about 20 degrees.
