Abstract

Water, especially water to be used as tap water, is chlorinated to a degree slightly beyond the "break-point" and the residual chlorine is removed by dissolving in the chlorinated water by electrolysis a metal such as iron and aluminium which is capable of combining with the residual chlorine to form a salt yielding a flocculent precipitate on hydrolytic dissociation the flocculent precipitate being removed from the water, as by filtering through the flocculent layer allowed to collect. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the introduction into the water, after the chlorination, of a small quantity of copper ions e.g. from 0.1 to 0.3 milligrams per litre as by the addition of copper salts or by electrolytic dissolution; the purpose of this introduction of copper ions is to remove impurities in the water such as metabolic products of Algae which retard the oxidation of ferrous to ferric ions by the residual chlorine. The flocculent layer absorbs all the copper ions. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
