Abstract
PURPOSE: To remove a cyanide ion in waste water containing heavy metals other than iron, by adding a ferrous salt into cyanide-contng. waste water under an acidic condition, and adding a reducing agent into the water in the presence of an alkaline earth metal oxide or hydroxide.
CONSTITUTION: Waste water containing cyanides and one or more heavy metals other than iron is adjusted at pH1W6 by addition of sulfuric acid or the like, and a ferrous salt such as ferrous sulfate is added to the water at a rate of 1/6mol or more of the cyanide concentration. Then the waste water is adjusted at pH7W11 by an oxide or hydroxide of Mg or Ca, and a reducing agent, e.g. Na2SO3 or NaHSO3, and added to the waste water at a rate of 1/10W1/2mol of the ferrous salt used. Thereafter, the waste water is kept for 15W60min at 30W90°C, to generate precipitates of iron ferrocyanide and various metal compounds. A high molecular flocculant may be used if necessary to separate the precipitates from the water.
