Abstract

654,197. Furnaces; smoke preventing. GUEST, G. Aug. 19, 1948, No. 21869. [Classes 51(i) and 51(ii)] A furnace plant for recovering metal from scrap material without the production of smoke comprises a unit 1, having a combustion chamber 6 communicating with a stack 11, and additional units 2, 3 and 4 each having a combustion chamber 6 which communicates through a gas outlet 8 with a common flue 9 opening into the space 7 below the fire bars 5 of the unit 1. Each unit comprises an apertured partition 14 which supports a melting pot 15, and the units 2 and 3 are extended above the partition to form closed chambers 20 which communicate with the gas outlets 8 and flue 9 through passages 22, 23, Fig. 3; controlled by dampers 24. The unit 1 is also formed with a closed chamber 20 which communicates with the space 7. The combustion chamber of the unit 4 is fitted with a blower 19, and the stack 11 is provided with a coke filter 12. In use, smoke produced in the chambers 6 or 20 of the units 2-4 is consumed in the combustion chamber of the unit 1 which is fed with smokeless fuel. When the plant is used for recovering metal from scrap electric cable, the units 2 and 3 are used for burning off the insulating material, and the units 4 and 1 for melting the copper and lead sheathing respectively.
