627,219. Shaft furnaces. LEPERSONNE, M. G. H. M. May 6, 1946, No. 13678. Convention date, May 22, 1945. [Class 51 (ii)] In a cross-draught shaft furnace flanked by chambers communicating with the shaft through openings in the wall of the latter, the shaft 4 is formed within metallic walls 1 by two perforated walls 51 and 52 and is divided into superposed sections by a constriction 6. One of the flanking chambers is also divided into two sections by a partition 9, the other acting as a duct 10 for the upward passage of heating gases admitted at 7, whereby these gases pass horizontally through the material in the shaft 4 twice before being exhausted at 12. In a modification Fig. 2 (not shown) the furnace is also divided into juxtaposed sections by vertical partitions, each section being heated by separate streams of hot gases and in a further modification Fig. 3 (not shown) the duct 10 is also divided by a partition, a separate connection being provided between diagonally disposed flanking chambers so that the hot gases pass through both sections of the shaft 4 in the same direction.
