499,179. Melting furnaces. FERRO ENAMELING CO. (ENGLAND), Ltd. May 11, 1938, No. 14039. Convention date. May 11, 1937. [Class 51 (ii)] A furnace, more particularly adapted for melting porcelain enamel and other vitreous material, comprises side by side melting and fining-chambers 3, 4 connected at one end below the level of the molten material by the passage 5, and at a position spaced therefrom by the heating-gas port 6, the melting chamber being fired by a burner 10 at the opposite end to the passage 5, and the waste gases being exhausted from the fining-chamber through the stack flue 15. The raw materials are fed in at the doghouse 7, and the refined product is drawn off at the discharge opening 12 so that the material follows a U-shaped course through the furnace, the flow in the lining-chamber being countercurrent to the heating-gases. The gas or oil burner 10 delivers into a preliminary combustion chamber 8 and an auxiliary burner 18 may be provided for the fining-chamber. The stack flue has inlet ports 16, 17 at right-angles to one another, and a drain port 14 is provided at the lowest of the fining-chamber.
