Abstract

A core is made from sand, drying oil and an accelerator including a substance containing the peroxide group, the proportions being such that an adequate bond is formed on setting, but this does not occur before moulding is finished. Suitable oils are tung, oiticica, dehydrated castor, linseed, perilla, sunflower seed, grapeseed, soya and tall. They may be blown with air, heat polymerized, bodied, vulcanized or isomerized. The peroxide compound may be inorganic, e.g. peroxides of hydrogen, sodium, barium or zinc or alkali perborates, percarbonates or persulphates, or organic, e.g. alkyl-derivatives of hydrogen peroxide, e.g. ethyl peroxide and benzoyl peroxide. The peroxide compound may be mixed with the oil before use or be sprayed on to the oil bonded body. The usual metallic dryers may be added also. Some examples of suitable mixtures are given. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the application of the mixtures of oil and accelerator to the making of protective coatings, impregnated paper or textiles, laminated stock and sheet such as linoleum or oil cloth. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
