Abstract
A flexible and waterproof adhesive is in the form of a varnish prepared from linseed oil or china wood oil and a gum, for example, dammar, kauri, or copal, and to which a drying-agent, operating outwardly, for example, borate of manganese, is added. To accelerate the drying from the outer surface inwardly, and to improve the adhesive properties, electrolytic process white lead, known as "Dowdy white," is added; a paste dryer, for example, lead acetate and resinate of manganese also may be employed. When the adhesive is required to be more fluid, a japan drier is used, for example, "schrack japan." In preparing the varnish, the oil is boiled until it reaches nearly a solid state, and the varnish may comprise three parts of gum dammar with two parts of linseed oil. Castor oil may be added when the drying action is to be retarded. Specification 194,274 is referred to.
