Abstract
641,938. Coated fabrics decorative paper. BURGESS, A. F. (United Wallpaper, Inc.). Oct. 8, 1946, No. 30009. [Classes 96 and 140] [Also in Group XV] A sheet of wallpaper &c. has applied to at least one surface an oleo-resinous ground coating, decorative material comprising oleoproteinous water ink, and an outer protective resinous coating. This is stated to produce a surface resistant to grease, ink stains &c. The term " resinous " is intended to cover cellulose derivatives. As described, the ground coating comprises resinous material, oleaginous material, a thinner and, if desired, a pigment. The resinous material may be a combination of any of the following : ester gum, alkyd resins, dammar, kauri or Manila gum, ethyl or benzyl cellulose, acrylic resins, methyl methacrylates or polystyrene. The oleaginous material may comprise vegetable oils, e.g. linseed, soybean, castor or Chinawood oil, and synthetic drying oils. Suitable thinners are petroleum hydrocarbons, benzine, benzene, turpentine and turpentine hydrocarbon substitutes. The pigment may comprise white lead, zinc oxide, lithopone, zinc sulphide, titanium dioxide, calcium sulphate or calcium carbonate. In order to reduce penetration of the paper a small amount of an active alkali agent in water may be emulsified into the coating. This agent may be sodium silicate, sodium carbonate, sodium hydroxide, ammonium hydroxide or trisodium phosphate. Plasticizers such as tricresyl phosphate or di-octyl phthalate may also be included. The decorative material comprises pigments, a protein binder, an oleaginous plasticizer and water as a vehicle. The pigments may comprise lithopone, titanium oxide, China clay, kaolin, calcium carbonate, iron oxide yellow, burnt umber, toluidine red, and Monastral blue in any combination. The binder may comprise a water dispersion of casein, soya or corn protein, or glue. Suitable plasticizers are mineral oil, decolourized neutralized hydrocarbon oil, glycerine, glucose, and sulphonated oils. The protective coating may comprise resinous material, a solvent, a plasticizer and a flatting agent. The resinous material may comprise a cellulose derivative, e.g. ethyl, nitro- or benzyl cellulose or a methyl methacrylate or polyvinyl chloride. Suitable solvents are ethyl, butyl and propyl alcohol, benzene xylol and methyl ketone. The plasticizer may comprise castor oil, mineral oil, tricresyl phosphate, dioctyl phthalate or trimethyl phthalate. Suitable flatting agents are finely ground dehydrated silicas, diatomaceous earth and calcium carbonate. An example is given of a composition for the three coatings of the wallpaper. The process for making wallpaper is as follows. The ground coating is applied and the paper is passed through a drier for 10 minutes. The decorative material is then printed in several layers and the paper dried again. The paper is then passed through calender rollers to press the decorative material into the ground coating and a thin film of the outer protective coating is applied.
