Abstract

393,132. Transfers ; transferring designs ; ink. POSCHEL, A. B., 444, 12th Street, Brooklyn, New York, U.S.A. Aug. 26, 1932, No. 23917. [Class 100 (ii).] Absorbent or fibrous materials such as fabrics, silk, leather, and cellulose products are decorated in one or more colours by the application of a transfer consisting of a resilientlycoated sheet carrying the design, in the presence of a solvent for the dyestuff and with the application of pressure and, if necessary, heat ; in the case of normally impermeable materials, the solvent used for the dye is also a solvent of the material. The transfer comprises a paper base provided with a coating which is impermeable to the usual dye solvents, normally resilient, and slightly tacky, and which preferably consists of a mixture of rubber latex, casein, zinc stearate, water, paraffin emulsion, formaldehyde, and triethanolamine ; the following alternatives are also referred to : dry rubber or caoutchouc in place of the rubber latex ; albumin, gelatine, or glue for the casein; aluminium stearate or talcum for the zinc stearate ; castor oil emulsion or sulphonated oil for the paraffin emulsion ; and ammonia or a glycol stearate for the triethanolamine. After the paper has been coated it is allowed to dry and season, and is then provided with the colour coating. For a single-colour coating, a mixture of a dyestuff, a pigment if desired, solvent, vehicle, binder, and plastifier is applied in a coating-machine. A water-soluble body, for use with water as transferring-liquid, consists of an aqueous solution of basic dyestuff, acetic acid, albumin, gum arabic, molasses, and triethanolamine. For use with alcohol as transferring-liquid, the following mixtures may be used : (a) dyestuff, carbitol, methyl alcohol, cumar resin, blown castor oil, shellac, ethylene dichloride, and a material known as " cellosolve " ; or (b) a mixture of dyestuff, pigment, methyl alcohol, sandarac resin, alcohol, butyl alcohol petroleum ether, and dibutylphthalate. The resinous materials may be replaced by nitrocellulose or cellulose acetate, and a solvent therefor, e.g. acetone, is used as the transferring- liquid ; in an example, a mixture of dyestuff, methyl alcohol, cellulose acetate, acetone, ethyl lactate, toluol, gum elemi, and tricresyl phosphate is used. For single or multicolour patterns, employing photo-mechanically prepared plates, dyestuff inks, and alcohol as transferring-liquid, an ink comprising an alcohol soluble dye, methyl alcohol, gum elemi, diatomaceous earth, ethylene dichloride, and carbon tetrachloride may be used. For use with lithographic printing, a drying-oil cannot be used as the vehicle, and synthetic resins, e.g. coumarone, chlorinated diphenyl, or polymerized terpenes in non-drying and essential oils can be employed ; as an example, an oil or alcohol soluble dye is mixed with a varnish comprising chlorinated diphenyl, coumarone, resin, blown castor oil, elemi resin, and elemi oil. The material to be treated is coated or sprayed with the solvent on both surfaces and is preferably piled in an airtight container to ensure thorough impregnation. It is then supported on a thin metal plate provided with a rubber or felt blanket, the transfer is superposed, and pressure, and if desired heat, applied. The paper and resilient coating is stripped off and, if necessary to provide a deeper penetration, the material is sprayed with the solvent, and can then be protected by application of a coagulating-material such as albumin, casein, or gelatine.
