Abstract

318,937. Crawford, J. W. C., Scharff, G. E., and Imperial Chemical Industries, Ltd. March 9, 1928. Dye preparations.-Water is removed from wet ;pigments or vat dyestuffs pastes by heating and agitating them with an inert liquid non-miscible with water such as benzene, toluene, xylene, or turpentine, which may be mixed with ethyl alcohol or higher homologues. The vapour formed is condensed and separated into two layers, the inert liquid with or without admixed alcohol being returned to the pigment and the distillation continued until dehydration is complete. The pigment may be used while wet with the inert liquid or alcohol or it may be dried below 50‹ C. at normal or reduced pressure and submitted to moderate grinding. Solvents of high boiling-point such as tricresyl phosphate, dibutyl phthalate or softening agents such as castor oil, linseed oil may be added to the dehydrating liquid. Wetting agents such as metallic resinates, for example magnesium, calcium, or barium resinate, resins such as natural rosin, synthetic resins such as those of the Albertol and Glyptal types, or ester gum, fatty acids or their soaps, higher fatty acid amides such as stearic anilide, salts of naphthenic acids. waxes such as paraffin or carnauba wax or wax-like bodies of the polychloro-aryl type, rubber, preferably in the form of latex, or cellulose esters and ethers such as acetyl-, benzyl-, and nitro-cellulose, may be employed. The treatment of vat dyestuff pastes yields products suitable for the dyeing and printing of textile fibres, in the preparation of lithographic ink, or pigmenting plastic compositions such as linoleum, nitrocellulose and rubber composition. In examples Scarlet lake, Brunswick Green, anthraquinone hydroazine, are treated to yield products readily dispersible in solutions of cellulose esters &c.
