Abstract

All or part of the surface of a vulcanized inflatable rubber toy is coated with individually separate fibres so that the extensibility of the rubber is not substantially reduced. The surface of the toy is treated with a solvent, strewn with the fibres, subjected to pressure by means of a rubber air cushion and the coating is finally vulcanized. The solvent may contain an adhesive resin such as mastic. Alternatively, the inflated vulcanized toy may be dipped into a rubber solution containing an adhesive and the fibre coating then applied as previously described. In a modified process, the toy is dipped in a rubber solution containing the adhesive, dried and then dipped into a solvent alone and the coating applied. A dispersion of rubber may be used in place of the solution.
