Abstract

In a toy, air cushion or other inflatable rubber article of the type provided with a fibre covering, the covering consists of a mixture of at least two different kinds of fibres. The fibres of one kind in the mixture are preferably of a longer average length than the fibres of another kind, the shorter fibres being preferably of a darker colour than the longer fibres. Suitable mixtures to give a plush or fur-like appearance comprise cotton and artificial silk, wool and silk, or cotton and animal hair, but any kind of animal, mineral or vegetable fibres may be used. One method of affixing the fibres to the article comprises coating the inflated article with an adhesive, such as a 20-25 per cent benzol solution of rubber, by dipping; strewing artificial silk fibres on the surface of the article after the evaporation of the solvent; placing the article in a rotating drum containing cotton fibres of a less average length than the silk fibres; removing excess fibres by brushing or a blast of compressed air; and vulcanizing while still inflated by the aid of sulphurchloride vapour. The static electricity produced by the friction between a number of articles in the rotating drum prevents the fibres from sticking together along their whole length. Simple articles may be coated in uninflated condition by simple strewing and brushing operations and vulcanization may in some cases be dispensed with.
