Rubber articles are covered before vulcanization with a coating of an organic material which shrinks during drying and tightly surrounds the article during vulcanization, but can subsequently be removed before the article is used. Suitable organic materials are solutions of cellulose derivatives from which the solvent may be removed, or from which cellulose may be precipitated. These may be applied as liquids to the rubber article, or may be formed into tapes, films, tubes or the like which are moistened, e.g. with glycerine containing water to render them pliable before applying them to the article. These coatings also form a protective covering for the vulcanized articles while stored before use.
