[Class 125(iii)] A closure for jars &c. 13 comprises a disc portion 1 and an integral depending skirt 3 provided with means 12 to retain the closure in position and adapted to receive a gasket or sealing compound 5 about the periphery of the inside of the disc, and has a plurality of circumferential slits 6 provided in the disc or skirt adjacent the junction of disc and skirt, the portions 7 of material between the slits being narrow relative to the circumferential length of the closure, and forming the only attachment of the disc to the skirt. The disc may be dished at 2 and the gasket contained in the groove 4. Fig. 2 illustrates an example having three slits 6 of approximately equal length. When the slits are formed in the skirt the upper and/or lower edges of the slits are advantageously curled inwardly to retain the gasket, thus Fig. 3 shows the upper edge 8 curled inwardly, and similarly when the slits are forward in the disc the inner or outer edge may be curled inwards, as the outer edge 11 in Fig. 7. The closure may be secured by depending tabs 12, preferably rolled inwardly of the skirt, or by indentations in the skirt, e.g. at some or all the points where the connecting portions 7 are provided. The lower edge of the skirt may be raw or rolled to form a bead which may be used in levering off the lid. The closure may be formed of any suitable material preferably sheet metal. The closure may be provided with a large number of smaller slits instead of the long slits shown in Fig. 2. The closure can conform more readily to irregularities in the upper edge of the container.
