Abstract
652,013. Discharge lamps. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and CLACK, B. N. Aug. 25, 1948, No. 22406. [Class 39 (i)] A discharge lamp of the type used as a spectroscopic or interferometric source contains in a part of the envelope cooled below atmospheric temperature a solid adsorbing agent having a high adsorbtive power for such gaseous impurities as are not frozen out, while not adsorbing any of the gas filling, which includes one or more rare gases, and possibly metal vapour also. The example shown contains krypton at 1 mm. pressure, and in operation the lower limbs and capillary tube 3 are immersed in liquid air. Each limb contains ¢ to 1 gm. of granular activated charcoal or silica gel, as at 8 and 9, which can absorb impurities such as hydrogen or carbon monoxide, which are not frozen out by the low temperature, as are, for example, water vapour and carbon dioxide.
