Abstract

Helium, neon, krypton and xenon are freed from oxygen or nitrogen contaminants by contact with molten magnesium, suitably in an apparatus as described in the parent Specification. The inert gas may be passed through the molten magnesium, preferably maintained at a temperature such that the major portion of the reaction between any nitrogen and/or oxygen present and the magnesium takes place between the impurities and magnesium vapour. Alternatively, the inert gas is passed over molten magnesium maintained at such a temperature that its vapour pressure is sufficient to ensure complete reaction with magnesium vapour of any nitrogen and/or oxygen present in the inert gas.
