Abstract
155,783. Pintsch Akt.-Ges., J. Dec. 12, 1917, [Convention date]. Vacuum tubes.-Lamps of the type described in Specification 135,485, containing rare gases through which a luminous discharge is passed, are provided with a small addition of common gases or vapours to diminish pulverisation of the electrodes. The addition may consist of hydrogen, oxygen, or nitrogen or mixtures thereof, ammonia, carbonic acid gas, or vaporized metals or metal compounds. It may be introduced at the same time as the rare gas or may be previously occluded in the electrodes or other parts. There should be sufficient common gas or vapour present to be effective even after partial absorption by the electrodes has taken place. A suitable lamp filling consists of neon together with one-quarter of its volume of helium and 1 to 2 per cent of a common gas, preferably hydrogen. When mercury vapour is used as the addition, some common gas should be added to enable the lamp to work at low temperatures; this may consist of not more than 3 per cent, and preferably about 1 per cent of hydrogen. Mercury may be replaced by potassium or an amalgam.
