Abstract

660,000. Discharge lamps. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and CLACK, B. N. April 6, 1948, No. 9627. [Class 39 (i)] A low-pressure discharge lamp having an operating temperature not much in excess of 150‹ C. contains within the envelope a solid stable dehydrating agent such as silica gel to absorb water vapour evolved during operation. This is of advantage when the envelope includes a window or other seal of a kind which would not permit the normal outgassing bake at a sufficiently high temperature during evacuation. If the lamp filling includes a gas other than a rare gas, e.g. hydrogen, nitrogen or carbon dioxide, a normal metallic getter may react with the filling, and a dehydrating agent which does not so react, such as the abovementioned silica gel, is used. The material may be granular, or contained in a gauze capsule. According to the Provisional Specification, phosphorus pentoxide, activated alumina or activated charcoal may be used instead of silica gel.
