'[Class 125(ii)] A capping head of the type having a resilient member which is distorted to effect the crimping of a cap in capping bottles with aluminium foil, has a plunger member actuated by the insertion of a bottle into the capping head, the plunger actuating control means for the machine drive so that if a bottle is not fully inserted into the head, the drive is disconnected. In the form shown strip foil 12 is fed to a capping head, described in Specification 651,486 by a feeding head 18, described in Specification 637,064. The capping head has an outer sleeve 9 formed as a punch at its lower edge 11 to cut discs from foil fed into a slot 8, and an inner sleeve 17 which compresses a rubber ring 16 to crimp the disc, which is carried up into the head by a bottle top lifted therein. The capping head is operated by a lever 28 actuated at the currect moment by a spring mechanism, described in Specification 651,487. In order to clamp the disc on the bottle top a plunger 39, spring-loaded at 41, presses a rubber faced disc 43 at its lower end on to the foil as the bottle lifts towards the crimping position. This action lifts the plunger and a lever 64 bearing on its upper end, the lever 64 turning a shaft 45, this lifting a lever 48, to the end of which is attached a rod 49, which lifts and is held clear of a control pin 60 which actuates a clutch 50. If a bottle is not fully inserted into the head, the rod 49 is not lifted and trips the pin 60 so that the clutch is disengaged. The pin is located on the clutch so that after each capping stroke the machine continues to operate and prepares a cap disc for the next bottle, only stopping if a bottle is not then inserted into the head.
