Abstract
651,486. Bottle capping machines. SCOTTS ENGINEERING (NEWPORT), Ltd., and BURDIN, N. V. May 3, 1948, No. 12027. [Class 125(ii)] A capping head for a bottle capping machine has an outer sleeve formed with a lower cutting edge, which is adapted to cut caps from strip foil, slidably mounted in a body part of the machine, another sleeve sliding in the outer sleeve and bearing on a resilient ring held therein, the head being so arranged that pressure on the inner sleeve first causes the two to move down together to cut out a cap and then the inner sleeve to move independently to compress the resilient ring so as to crimp the cap which has been folded around a bottle top by a tapered lead in portion formed on the outer sleeve. In the machine shown, foil 12 is fed from a reel by a reciprocating feeding head 18 described in Specification 637,064 to the capping head which consists of a block 6 having a vertical bore the foil being fed into a slot 8 at its lower end. Slidablymounted in the bore is a sleeve 9 inwardly flanged at 10, the flange tapering at 36 to a cutting edge 11. Resting on flange 10 is a rubber ring 16 and above this an inner sleeve 17 surmounted by a cap 30 upon which bears a forked lever 28. In operation, foil is fed into slot 8 by head 18 and clamped on to an anvil ring 14 by a moving ring 13. Lever 28, actuated by a spring mechanism described in Specification 651,487 then applies pressure to sleeve 17 which moves downwards, carrying sleeve 9 which cuts out a foil disc which falls on to a flange 33. A bottle is then raised into the head, the taper 36 folding the foil around the neck, whilst it is held firmly against the bottle rim by a cushioned disc 43 mounted on a spring loaded plunger 39. When a flange 37 on sleeve 9 contacts the block 6, sleeve 17 continues to move down to bulge ring 16 outwardly, the ring engaging the foil to crimp it in position. As described in Specification 651,510 the top of plunger 39 bears against a lever 64 which is linked to a clutch mechanism 50 in the machine drive, so that if a bottle is not fully inserted into the head, the machine drive is disconnected. Waste foil is automatically cut off by a pair of shears 51, Fig. 5 (not shown).
