BOTTLE-onreine MACHINE.
I i Specification vof Letters llatent. Patented Sept. 17, 1918.;
Application mea January 22,' 191e. serial no. 73,617.
clear, and eXact description of the inven-` tion, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the ac.
companying drawings, and to thecharacters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to bottle capping machines. lt particularly relates to a means l/Vhat l have shown and described herein is merely a structure that I havel selected as an example for the purpose of illustrating the operation and construction of devices containing my invention.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 illustrates a sectional view of the parts of the bottle capping machine which operate upon the bottle to close Aand seal the cap on the bottle. Fig. 2 illustrates a sectional View of the elements illustrated in Fig. 1 when the position relative to the sealing die..
.1,- Fig. 1, is avcam which operates upon a roller 2 secured to the lower end olE a sleeve 3. vThe sleeve 3 is provided with a plunger .4 and with springs 5 which act upon the plunger. It is also provided with a fric* tional-buiier 7 consisting` of rods 8 which may be wedged into the space between the cone shaped nut 9 if the springs 5 are released tooquiclily. This construction is old and known in the art. A y
IThe bottle l0 is 'lfed orer the top of the plunger 4f in any suitable manner such as hy means ci? a table, heit or other conrcyer or feeding;` means. 1t passes beneath 'the sleeve which may be secured to or termed integral with a plate or flange it' ihe .lower side of the iange er plate provided with a downwardly extending 'llange 17 which is threaded to receive the ring 18. The ring 18 is provided with a conical opening 19 for guiding thetop of the bottle to the die 2O which is located in a recess formed in the plate 1G or the point of union between the sleeve 15 and the plate 16. The die 2O is also provided with a' conical or -frustumal opening 22 which is shaped so as to compress the cap 28 about the lip' of the mouth of the bottle.v A plunger 21 is located within the'- sleeve l5. Ithas a flange which abuts the lower end of thel sleeve 15 and limits its downward movement. A compression spring 26 located intermediate the upper end of the sleevel and the flange 25 yieldingly holds the plunger 24 down in the sleeve l5.
By my invention is provided a means for preventing the bottle 10 from penetrating beyond the sealing point in the die 20 which causes the bottle to break. l have provided a means for stopping the upward movement of the plunger 21 so that the springs A5 of the sleeve 3 will be compressed upon further upward movement of the sleeve 3 by the operation of the cam 1.
The plunger 24: is surrounded by a spring 26 the coils of which are, when in position to hold the plunger down, sufficiently close together so that when the plunger 'is r ised slightly above the sealingl point in the die 20, the coils will be compressed together, thus 'providing a stop for the-plunger which in its upward movement will pre-vent the bottle 10 from entering the die 2O to an extent to cause the bottle to be broken.
Having thus described my invention, what l claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,-
1. In a bottle capping machine, the combination of die for receiving the end of a bottle and pressing the edges of the cap around the lip of the bottle., a yielding means for forcingthe bottle toward the die, a plunger for holding the cap upon the bottlc, and a spring for yieldingly resisting the bottle from entering the die and positively `preventing the bottle from entering the die beyond thc'sealing point of thc cap ot the hottie.
ln a bottle capping1 machine, the eoiul nation of an annulary die for receiving the bottle from entering the die and for posiend of the bottle and pressing the edges of tively limiting its upward movement to prethe cap around the lip of the bottle, a yieldvent the end of the bottle from passing the 10 ing means for forcing the bottle toward the sealing point of the die.
5 die, a spring pressed plunger for holding In testimony whereof, I hn've hereunto ythe cap upon the bottle, a spring surrouudsigned my name to this specification. ing the plunger for yieldingly resisting the HENRY J. BECK.
