Be it known that I, TILLIAM HnoniniNN, a citizen of Germany, residing at Irvington, in the county of Essex and State 01? New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sealing-Cap-Attaching Apparatus; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of th invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to characters of reference marked there on, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates, generally, to improvements in stopper or cap-attaching devices; and, the present invention has reference, more particularly, to a novel and simply constructed apparatus which is especially adapted for use in securing the usual criinped metallic stopper-caps to the months or" bottles.
The present invention has for its principal object to provide a novel and simply-constructed capping device, provided with means for its attachment to'a bench or table, the device being readily operated, and is of such construction that the crimped aetallic cap is quickly and positively secured upon the mouth of the bottle. Other objects of the present invention not at this time more particularly enumerated will be clearly understood from the following detailed description of the present invention. Y
lVith the objects of the said invention in view, the invention the novel capping apparatus hereinafter more fully set forth; and, the said invention consists, furthermore, in the general an angements and combinations of the several de vices and parts, as well as in the details of the construction of the said parts, all of which will be more fully described in the following specification, and then finally embodied in the clauses of the claim which are appended to and which form an essential part of the said specification.

Referring now to the several figures, the reference-character 1 indicates a complete capping apparatus made according to and embodying the principles of the present invention, the said apparatus comprising a main body or base 2, formed with a receiving opening 8, substantially of the configuration shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings, and provided at one side with suitably formed clamping members, as i and 5, the member 5 being formed with a screw-threaded portion or boss 6 in which is movably disposed the screw-threaded portion or boss 6 in which is movably disposed the screwthreaded shank 7 of a tightening or clamping screw. as illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawings, ior attachment of the capping apparatus to the member 8 of a suitable workbench or table. Extending upwardly from the said main body or base 2 is a frame-work comprising a pair of standards, as 9 and 10, which are suitably connected by means of laterally extending members 11 and 12, said members being formed with tubular parts 13, providing a pair of bearings in which is movably mounted a cappin stem or plunger,

That portion of the plunger or stem 1-l which is located between the said laterally extending members 11 and 12, is encircled bya coiled spring 15, said spring having its lower one resting upon the upper surface of the laterally extending member 12, and the upper end of said spring bearing against pin 16, substantially as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings. The lower end-portion of the plunger or stem 14 progects beneath the lower surface of the said laterally extending member 12, and suitably secured to said lower end of said plunger or stem is a chambered or cup-shaped member, as 17, the purpose of which will presently be more fully set forth. In order to produce 'reciprocatory movement of the said plunger or stem 14, one of the standards, as 10,, is provided witha perforated lug 18, to whlch is pivotally connected, by means of a pivotpin 19, the one end portion of a link 20, the other end-portion of said link. being pivotally connected by means of a pin 21 with the end-portion 28 of an operating lever 22,
the said lever being operatively connected by means of a fulcrum-pin 24 with the upper end-portionof the stem or plunger 14, substantially in a manner as shown in said Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings. Upon its free endportion the said lever 22 is provided with a suitable operating handle 25 The previously mentioned articulated clamping jaws for receiving the neck-por. tion 27 of the bottle 26 which 1s to be capped,
is shown more particularly in Figs. 3 and t of the drawings, the same comprising two arc-shaped elements, as 28 and 29, the member 28 being pivotally mounted upon the upper surface of the body or base 2 of the device, by means of a pivot-post or pin 30.
The said member 28 is also provided with a suitable extension, as 31, to the free endportion of'which is pivoted, by means of a rivet or pin 32, an extension with which the othermember 29 is provided, as indicated in dotted outline in said figures.
W hen the two arc- shaped members 28 and 29 are brought into their closed relation,-
the concave and semi-circular open'portions 34 and 35 of the respective members 28 and 29 will form a ring-shaped bottle-holding attachment, as will be evident, and when 'moved directly over the opening 3 of the said body or base 2, the marginal portion 36 of the member or element 29 will ride directly beneath a hook-shaped lug, as 37,

The neck of the bottle is now depression of said member 1? tion 36 of the member 29 is caused to ride against the standard 10, causing the said members 28 and 29, as soon as the bottle has movedinto the opening 3, to completely em brace the neck of the bottle, thereby positively holding the bottle in its suspended position, with the closed clamping jaws re tained in their bottle-clamping relation, against displacement, by the headedpivotpost 30 and the engagement of the hooksha )ed projection 37 with the marginal edge-portion 36 of the jaw or member 29, as will be clearly understoodfrom an in spection of said Fig. 3 of the drawings.
The metal sealing cap 39 is now placed over the mouth-portion of the neck of the bottle, and the lever 22 by means of the handle 25 is pressed in a downward direction.
The action causes the'stem or plunger to be moved in a downward direction against cup-shaped meinber'l'? forcibly presses the cap 39 down over the mouth of theneck of the bottle, and tightly seals'the sameagamst accidental displacement, as will bGGYIClIlt.
To prevent a metal sealing capfrom becoming ammed 1n the cup-shaped portion or depression of the member 17, the laterally in Figs. 1 and 2, through correspondingly disposed holes or perforations 12 in the top of the said memberlf, and progect directly intothe chambered part of the said member, as shown.
Thus it will be evident, that in case sealing cap 39, during the downward'stroke of the apparatus, for some reason does not attach itself tothe mouth of the neck of the'bottle, it can not become jammed within the said cup-shaped member 17, since during the return stroke of the parts and the upward movement of the member 17 upon the fixed pins or stems 41, the latter engage the sealing cap and therebyforcibly expel the same from the cup-shaped portion or Of course I am aware that some changes may be made in the general arrangements and combinations of the various devices and parts, aswell as in the details of the con struction of the said parts, asset forth in the foregoing specification, and as defined in the clauses of the claim which are appended thereto. Hence, I do not limit myself to the exact arrangements and combina; tions of the several devices and parts, as described in thesaid specification, nor'do I 'the action of the spring 15, whereby'the confine myself to the exact details of the construction of the said parts, as illustrated in the accompau ing drzuvings.

A sealing cap attaching apparatus comprising a base formed with a receiving opening for the reception of the neck-portion of a bottle, a bottle-holder comprising a pair of pivotally connected bottle-clamping jaws adapted to embrace the neck-portion of the bottle, means for pirotally attaching one or" said jaws to said base, a hook-shaped projection extending from said base beneath which a portion of the other aw is adapted to be moved into engagement, a plunger movably disposed above saic base for attachment of a sealing-cap to the bottle, and means for actuating said plunger.
