A bottle-capping head comprises an annular clamping member having fingers 212, a deformable sleeve 15, and means for causing frustoconical surfaces on the sleeve and clamping member to slide upon one another thereby constricting the fingers 212 round a cap 3, 4 fitted to the mouth of a container. The fingers 212 depend from a ring 112 movable relative to the sleeve 15. A cap presser 9 has a guide stem 10 slidable through the bore 106 of a flange 6 formed in a tubular head 8, the upper part 108 of which is joined to a reciprocating press. A spring 19 compressed between a washer 11 and the flange 6 urges the cap presser 9 downwards to the limit permitted by an abutment 14 on the stem 10. A further spring 20 enables the ring 112 to yield slightly until the bottle cap is firmly seated, thereby ensuring that the fingers 212 are not pressed inwards until the cap bead 7 is in position. The cap comprises an inner part 3 of synthetic plastics material, e.g. polythene, which acts as lining and a metallic part 4. Operation.-The cap is seated on the bottle mouth as in Fig. 1. From this position it is pressed down on the neck by the presser 9 as the head 8 is moved downwards. Further movement of the head 8 against the action of spring 19 causes the cap to be encircled by the fingers 212. As the head 8 continues to descend, the sleeve 15 moves down against the fingers 212 causing them to press in the cap skirt.
