[Class 125(ii)] Bottle capping devices of the type described in Specifications 478,179 and 508,108, which comprise a thick ring or disc of rubber having a recess in its undersurface adapted to fit over a cap positioned on the mouth of the bottle, the pressing of the closuring device against the cap causing the edge of the rubber surrounding the recess to close inwardly to crimp the cap skirt in a groove around the bottle neck, are provided with a movable pressure plate adapted to urge the centre of the rubber ring or disc downwardly to expand the closing edge of the recess and thus facilitate the fitting of the ring over the mouth of the capped bottle. The Figures show the invention as applied to the capping head of a capping machine as described in Specification 646,552. A thick rubber closing ring 23 has an annular recess 24 in its lower face adapted to fit over a capped bottle 4. The outer edge of the ring is held between members 21 and '22 which are adapted to be pressed downwardly, as a unit, by a cam 32 acting against a return spring 26. A pressure plate 35 engages the rear face of ring 23 and is normally urged downwards by a spring 40 to the position shown in Fig. 1, thus enlarging the recess 24 so that it can easily receive the top of bottle 4 with the cap thereon. The capping stroke of the head forces the periphery of ring 23 downwardly, the closing edge of the recess 24 turning inwardly, to the position shown in Fig. 2, to crimp the cap skirt into the groove on the bottle neck, the pressure plate 35 compressing the spring 40. The ring 23 and'pressure plate may be incorporated in a hand tool when the spring 40 may be omitted and the pressure plate operated manually.
