416,276. Mechanism for making and applying caps to bottles &c. ENZINGER-UNION-WERKE AKT.-GES., Pfeddersheim, near Worms-on-Rhine, Germany. March 15, 1934, No. 8229. Convention date, May 19, 1933. [Class 125 (ii).] In a method of controlling cap making and applying machines, the clutch for the cap making mechanism is actuated by a bottle or similar article to which a cap is being applied, to make a cap for the next succeeding bottle. A bottle 1 is fed to the machine, e.g. by a star wheel, and stands on a support 2 vertically reciprocated by a cam. On the bottle is a capping head 3 and centring plunger 4 beneath which is a stamped cap 5. When the bottle is raised, the cap is set on its neck and the plunger 4 is raised to its uppermost limit in the pressure plunger 6, thus actuating an extension 7, and lever 8 fulcrumed at 9 and pivoted at its other end to a link 10 itself pivoted to a lever 11 fulcrumed at 12 and holding back an abutment 13 on a rotatable key. A cam 15 on a shaft 14 can actuate a lever 18 fulcrumed at 17 when the shaft 14 is in motion. A toothed wheel 20 is loose on the shaft 14 and is rotated continuously by a wheel 23 on the main shaft 24. The bore of the wheel 20 has a groove 25. When a bottle has reached its highest position and released the abutment 13, the groove 25 at its next rotation is engaged by a key 22 on a hub 21 fast on the shaft 14 so that the shaft 14 with the cam 15 is set in motion and, the lever 18 and stamping tool 19 are actuated. A lever 27 is provided to transfer the stamped cap from the stamping tool to the capping head. When the bottle is lowered, after capping, the lever 8 is returned to its original position by a spring 28 and the abutment 13 is again held back.
