Abstract
422,329. Labelling-machines; feeding- devices. DEHN, F. B., 103, Kingsway, London.-(Pevely Dairy Co. ; 1001, South Grand Boulevard, St. Louis, Missouri, U.S.A.) July 9, 1934, No. 20136. [Class 73] [See also Group II] A machine for placing conical advertising collars on the necks of bottles comprises a turret on which are mounted collar magazines and means for taking collars from the magazines in turn and dropping them on to bottles fed by a conveyer. The magazines 32, Fig. 2 are mounted radially on a tubular shaft 21 rotated by bevel gearing 20 from a horizontal shaft 18 driven, through a clutch, from a motor. The collars are supported by U-shaped tubular members 34 and are retained by wedges 55. The collars are removed by fingers carried by spring-influenced rods 23 which are reciprocated as the shaft 21 rotates by means of a fixed cam 25. Each rod 23 is provided with a rack 28 engaging a segment carried by a pivoted arm 36, Fig. 9 the end 49 of which forms a collar-gripping member. Another gripping member is formed by the end of a cranked lever 42 influenced by a spring plunger 47 and operated by a link 41 connected with a plate 38 pivoted at 39 and fitted with a roller 40 riding on a freely-mounted and angular cam member 37. As the rods 23 reciprocate, the levers 42 and 36 remove a collar and release it when in position above a bottle neck. Each magazine is furnished with duplicate sets of levers 36, 42, and the lower lip of the magazine is fitted with a friction member 57 secured thereto by a screw 58. The bottles are fed by a conveyer 60, Fig. 1 and engage a trip lever 65 operating a catch engaging a latch 87 on the end of a lever carried on a shaft 72 and connected by a link 77 to a clutch controlling shaft 79. The shaft 72 is rocked, in step with the rotation of the shaft 21, by means of an arm thereon engaging a cam 74, Fig. 2 on the bevel 20, and, when a bottle is not present, is engaged by the catch operated by the trip lever 65 to hold the clutch in inoperative position. The clutch comprises a dog 83, Fig. 5 mounted in a recess 82 in the driven shaft 18 and pressed by a pin 85 into engagement with one of a number of notches 86 in a driving collar. The pin is thrown into its disengaged position by a member 80 on the shaft 79 operated by the member 77. The bottles then pass a retarding arm which is operated by a cam on the shaft 21 to release the bottles in step with the operation of the collar-feeding mechanism.
