Abstract

399,942. Operating clutches. BIFURCATED & TUBULAR RIVET CO., Ltd., 235, Upper Thames Street, London, and PATERSON, L. M., Foxhill, Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire. June 23, 1932, No. 17733. [Class 80 (ii).] Clutch mechanism, for intermittently-operated power-driven machines, has a slidable bolt, or equivalent device, adapted to engage a member rotating with the driven element of the clutch for disengaging said clutch, the slidable bolt being moved into clutch disengaging position by a cam rotating with the driven element, or by a member directly actuated by said cam. In a mechanism in which a driven shaft p carries a key k which is turned about its axis by a spring S so as to lock the shaft p to a driving pulley f, a bolt b abuts a radial arm k<2> on the key k to uncouple the parts f, p. The bolt b is moved out of the path of the arm k<2> by a pawl m which is pivoted to one arm m<5> of a bell-crank lever and is connected by a spring s to the other arm m3 thereof. When a rod m<1> connected to the arm m<3> is pulled, the pawl m at first moves bodily to withdraw the bolt b until it is engaged by an adjustable projection m<7>, whereupon it turns about its pivot m<6> so that its nose slides beneath and disengages from the bolt head b<1>. When the shaft p has made one revolution, a cam c thereon engages the bolt band slides it into the path of the arm k<2> to disengage the clutch. In a modification, for a dog-clutch, the bolt b is withdrawn from engagement with the slidable member of the clutch by the bell crank and pawl means, shown in Fig. 2, so that the slidable member, under spring action, engages the driving member. After one revolution, a cam on the slidable member acts through a lever and forces the bolt back to its operating position. Another cam on the slidable member thereupon engages the bolt and the clutch parts are separated.
