Abstract

489,418. Feeding capsules &c. HANSEN, A. L. Jan. 26, 1938, No. 2482. [Class 78 (i)] [Also in Group XVII] Apparatus for feeding bottle capsules to a capsuling-machine or cups to a machine for filling them with chocolate, ice-cream, or the like, comprises a magazine for holding the capsules &c. in a telescoped pile and a movable pair of stops disposed at unequal distances from the end of the magazine and each adapted to support the pile and actuated by a common driving means so that they can be moved alternately into and out of the path of the pile and alternately support the lowermost and lowermost but one of the capsules &c. in the pile while the driving means also actuates a tongsshaped catcher which, in accordance with the movements of the stops, is moved towards the stops and opened to grip the rim of the lowermost capsule &c. and closed and moved away from the stops to draw the capsule &c. from the pile and deliver it to the capsuling or filling machine. As shown the stops 4, 5 each comprise a pair of jaws coaxially mounted on shafts 7, 8 carrying respectively arms 14, 9 having rollers engaging cams 16, 11 on a shaft 12 driven from a shaft 13 which carries a cam 24 engaging a roller 23 on a lever 22 pivoted in the frame 1. The lever 22 is connected by a link 21 to an arm on a shaft 19 carrying the arm 18 of the tongs-shaped catcher, the other arm 26 thereof being pivoted to the arm 18 and carrying a rod 29 which passes through the arm 18 and carries a roller 31 resting against a cam 34 on the frame 1. The jaw 26 is influenced by springs 28, 32, the former keeping the jaws closed on the latter tending to open them and, with the pile of telescoped capsules &c. in the magazine supported by the jaws of the stop 4, the shaft 19 is actuated so that the catcher moves towards the stop, a spring- controlled rod 35 being moved by an eccentric 40 driven from the shaft 13 so that its bevelled end 42 is forced against the roller 31 to open the jaws of the catcher which then lie between the jaws of the stop 5. The jaws of the stop 4 are then opened, the pile of capsules moves down until stopped by the stop 5 and the rim of the lowermost capsule passes between the jaws of the catcher which is closed by the upward movement of the rod 35. The stop 4 is then returned to support the rim of the lowermost but one of the capsules, the stop 5 is opened, and the shaft 19 moves the closed catcher to withdraw the lowermost capsule from the pile ; as the catcher is swung back by the shaft 19, the roller 31 is moved by the cam 34 to push the rod 32 forward and open the jaw 26, the released capsule dropping from the catcher into a shoot leading to the capsuling or filling machine.
