459,569. Indexing-mechanism. RYDER & SON, Ltd., T., RYDER, R. D. G., and SMITH, V. H., Turner Bridge Works, Bolton. Dec. 9, 1935, No. 34035. [Class 83 (iii)] An indexing-mechanism for machine tools comprises a shaft a carrying a slidable worm b driving a worm wheel e on which is mounted a cam f operating an arm h on a vertical shaft i carrying the locking catch j of the mechanism. The cam f operates to disengage and hold out the locking catch until the roller g passes off the end of the cam, Fig. 2, whereupon a spring plunger k rotates the worm wheel rapidly to cause a snap return of the locking catch. During this movement the worm b slides along its shaft into engagement with the collar d. The rapid movement of the cam f and worm wheel is cushioned by a spring arm m. The sliding worm may be replaced by a free-wheel device to allow the quick return of the locking catch.
