695,412. Lathe details. WERKZEUGMASCHINEN-FABRIK GILDEMEISTER & CO. AKT.-GES. May 1, 1951 [May 2, 1950], No. 10209/51. Class 83 (iii). Feeding means for a lathe carriage adapted for both hand and automatic control and embodying a drop-worm has the movement of the worm effected by a member or members pivoted for operation in a plane radial to the axis of rotation of the worm-wheel, and by a rod longitudinally displaceable thereby along that axis, the said member or members being arranged to move away from the lathe to. engage the worm and wheel. The hand levers 6 of the control wheel are pivotally mounted at 13 in a rotatable drum 5 which is keyed to a hollow shaft 2 mounted in a casing 1 fixed to the lathe bed and carrying at its inner end a pinion 4 for feeding the lathe carriage. The levers 6 have ball-ends 14 engaging a collar on a rod 17 passing through the shaft 2 and connected by a pin 21 at its inner end with a flanged disc 19 slidable on the shaft. The disc 19 bears on one side. against a ball-piece 22 carried by a dropworm box 11, and on its other side against a spring-pressed stud 30 which operates a pivoted latch 25 for holding the drop-worm 9 in engagement with the worm-wheel 3. Automatic disengagement of the drop-worm is effected by the lathe carriage striking a stop 42, Fig. 5, which moves back against spring pressure and rocks a lever 35 in a clockwise direction. A cam surface 37 on the lower end of the lever presses a roller 38 downwardly. The roller is carried on the end of a lever secured to the spindle 26, Fig. 1, of the latch 25 for releasing the worm.
