Abstract
478,745. Turning -lathes. JONES & LAMSON MACHINE CO. July 30, 1936, No. 21114. Convention date, Aug. 26, 1935. [Class 83 (iii)] A feed knock-off device 'for a lathe &c. carriage comprises a nut segment movable into or out of engagement with a rotary lead screw, a latch for holding the nut segment in engagement with the screw, a stop, a member movably carried by the carriage and adapted to engage the stop as the carriage approaches a desired traverse limit to be stopped while the movement of the carriage continues to operate means for releasing the latch. The hollow removable lead screw 2, Fig. 4, is secured to the driven shaft 1 and engaged by the nut segment 21, Fig. 2, for screwing feed. The nut segment is carried in a lever 15 pivoted at 12 and is adjustable for wear by a screw 26 and lock nut 27. The outer end of the lever is engaged by the forked end 92 of a hand lever 90, Fig. 4, which pivots about a sleeve 35 passing through the lever. A spring-pressed latch member 37 is housed within the sleeve and the projecting end 40 of this member is adapted to enter the end of a sleeve piece 41 to maintain the nut segment in engagement with the screw. The handle 90 is capable of limited rotation about the sleeve 35 and a slight depression effects, by means of a cam washer 94 and projecting studs 93, withdrawal of the latch from engagement with the sleeve 41, a further downward movement of the handle producing a rotation of the lever 15 and disengagement of the nut segment. This is effected automatically by a stud 85, Fig. 1, carried by a lever 80, pivoted at 81 to a bracket 83, striking the end 47 of an ejector 45, Fig. 4, which is moved against spring pressure within the sleeve 41 to push out the latch 37. The lever 80, Fig. 1, has a block 75 attached thereto which engages, through a tapered open-sided recess 76, the head 72 of an adjustable stop member 70 carried by a member 65 capable of sliding movement in the carriage. A further stop member 66 carried by the member 65 engages an adjustable dead stop 62 and thus arrests the member 65, but the carriage travels on a further distance and, through the engagement of the stop-head 72 with the slot in the member 75, the lever 60 is rocked to release the nut segment. The bracket 83 may be rotated in a direction outwardly from the plane of the paper, Fig. 1, to disengage the member 75 and stop-head 72 thus rendering the automatic stop ineffective. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 describes also a knock-off device, operating in a manner similar to the above, for use with a rack and pinion fed carriage. The operating lever in this instance, when moved to effect the automatic feed, engages a clutch for driving the pinion which is mounted on the carriage, and the lever is provided with a handle similar to the handle 90 having latch mechanism operated by the stop device 65. This subjectmatter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
