Abstract

A barrel plating apparatus comprises a motor adapted to drive a shaft 17 extending along a plating tank, a worm gear 15 slidably and relatively non-rotatably mounted on the shaft 17 at each barrel station, each barrel having a gear 14 adapted to engage one of the gears 15, means being provided for sliding each gear 15 into and out of engagement with the gear 14. A barrel may thus be removed from the tank without stopping the motor. Each gear 15 is splined at 19 on the shaft 17 and has an annular recess 21 which receives a lug 22 on an arm 23 secured to a shaft 24 which is rotatable by a handle, not shown. Pressure is maintained on the handle during operation, to hold the gear 15 against a collar 28 and thus transmit thrust to the gear 14. On releasing the handle, a spring 26 moves the arm 23 anti-clockwise so moving the gear 15 to the left, rotation of the gear 14, and thus of the barrel, ceasing, the gear 15 eventually disengaging the gear 14.
