Abstract

828,280. Lathes; machine-tool details. SENECA FALLS MACHINE CO. Oct. 22, 1957, No. 32956/57. Class 83 (3). A lathe or other machine tool with a sliding tool carriage and a normally stationary lead screw, has a brake connected to the latter and a rotatable lead screw nut, the lead screw being rotated to increase the rate of traverse. A tool carriage 10 carries a rotatable nut 11 engaging a lead screw 12. The nut may be rotated by a gear 15 and splined shaft 16. The lead screw is normally held stationary by a magnetic brake 14, but may be rotated to give the carriage a rapid traverse, generally in the return movement. The shaft 16 is connected to the lead screw 12 through a sprocket drive 20-22 and through a magnetic friction clutch 23. When this clutch is closed, the brake 14 is automatically opened. The drive is provided from a continuously rotated low-speed shaft 30 and a continuously rotated high-speed shaft 31. The first is connected through pick-off gears 35, 36, to one part 32 of a two-part shaft 32, 33 connected by an overrunning clutch 37. The shaft 31 drives an aligned shaft 31a through a magnetic clutch 40 and thence through gears 41, 42 to shaft 33. The latter drives a countershaft 34 through gears 44, 45, and the countershaft has a forward drive connection to the splined shaft 16 through a magnetic clutch 50 and gears 51, 52. The countershaft also has a reverse connection to the shaft 16 through a magnetic clutch 55 and sprocket drive 56-58. A magnetic brake 25 is provided on the shaft 16 which, when operated with clutch 50 or 55 disengaged stops the carriage feed. An alternative arrangement omits the brake 25 and enables clutch 23 to be supplied with a lowvoltage so that it may slip and provide a decelerating effect on the carriage movement.
