Abstract
664,051. Lathes &c. SMALLPEICE, C. D. P. March 9, 1949, No. 6399/49. Class 83 (iii). A lathe or other machine-tool comprises a spindle-driving motor 38 also adapted to feed a slide 33 through a three-element gear 27 by holding the gear element 28 so that the motor can drive a feed-shaft 20 for the slide, and a quick-traverse motor 25 which is de-energised during operation of the motor 38 and drives the feed-shaft through the driven element 23, 26 of the gear 27 while the gear element 28 is revolving freely, the gear element 28 being adapted to be held stationary by a brake 29 biased to the released position and applied by a solenoid 30. The motor 38 drives the machinespindle (not shown) through belts 50, gears 51, a worm and wheel 53, 54, and a belt 55, and the third element 31 of the gear 27 through pick-off gears 32. The gear 31 is mounted upon the driven element 23, 26 which is in the form of a carrier for two planet-gears in mesh with the sun-gears 28 and 31, the element being corinected through gears 24 or a chain with the motor 25, which is preferably reversible. A spindle 65, Fig. 4, fixed to the sun-gear 28 is secured to a brake drum 63 which is provided with brake shoes 75 adapted to be separated into engagement with the drum by a cam 67 operated by a lever 68 connected to the solenoid 30. This lever may be returned by spring- pressure, or, as illustrated in Fig. 4, by gravity. A worm 22, Fig. 1, on the carrier 23 transmits the drive to the shaft 20 which feeds the slide 33 through a rack 35 and pinion 34. Highspeed traverse of the slide 33 is stopped at the work-face by co-operation between an adjustable dog 36 on the slide and a switch 37 for the motor 25. A depth-of-feed switch 40 is provided for the motor 25 to institute a rapid return of the slide, and a switch 41 is provided for rapid advance. A pivoted-link handtraverse lever 43 for the slide may be engaged through a dog-clutch 44 and shaft with the shaft 23, this engagement operating a switch 45 which de-energises the motor 25 and solenoid 30. An additional solenoid may actuate a mechanism to feed a tool towards the work against the influence of a bias when the slide is being fed by the motor 38, the tool being retracted automatically upon de-energising the solenoids. The machine is operated from a panel 47 bearing controls marked " stop," " inch," " start," " auto " and " hand."
