Abstract

926,653. Lathe and the like feed mechanism. MASCHINENFABBIK FRORIEP G.m.b.H. Sept. 30, 1960 [Oct. 1, 1959], No. 33648/60. Class 83 (3). Feed mechanism for lathe and like carriages is arranged so that practically all the shafts lie in one plane so that a flat construction for fitting into the saddle of a heavy duty lathe is obtained. A motor 1 drives through gears 2, 3, the input shaft of a feed regulating mechanism 4 having two output shafts one for high-speed movements and the other for working feeds operated by electromagnetic clutches 7, 8, respectively. Longitudinal movement of the saddle is effected by a pinion 27 on the saddle and a fixed rack 28 on the lathe bed. The tool carriage traverse is effected by a screw P and this mechanism is employed as detailed below for taper turning. Screw cutting is effected either through the rack and pinion drive or through a leadscrew (not shown) in the tool carriage support driven by a bevel 39. Longitudinal saddle movement. (a) For quick approach, through feed reduction mechanism gears 5, 6, electromagnetic clutch 7, gears 10- 12, clutch 17 to worm 25. (b) The latter movement may be reversed by driving through gears 9, 13, 14, 15. (c) For working feed the other output shaft of the feed reduction mechanism is used and the drive taken through clutch 8, gears 9-12 or reversed through gears 9, 13, 14, 15. Transverse feed of tool-slide. Clutch 16 is engaged and the drive taken through gears 18- 20, double clutch part 21 and gears 22-24, clutch 24a is engaged to drive a screw-threaded spindle P which feeds the slide. Taper turning. Double clutch part 30 is engaged with driven part 29 to drive gears 31, 32, a pick-off gear train 33, 33a, 34 arranged with a quadrant W, and clutch part 35. Double clutch part 21 is moved to the right to disengage gear 20 and engage clutch part 35 which then drives through gears 22, 23, 24 and clutch 24a to move the tool slide. Screw-cutting. Motor 1 is brought into synchronous running with the work spindle by means not shown and screw-cutting effected by two methods. (a) Double-clutch part 30 is moved to engage clutch-part 37 which drives gears 31, 32 and pick-off train to clutch part 36. Double clutch part 21 is moved to engage clutch part 36 and wheel 29 which then drives rack and pinion gearing. (b) Alternatively from the pick-off drive point in (a) the clutch part 21 may be moved to engage clutch part 35 and drive effected through gears 21-23 to shaft 5 which drives through bevels 38, 39 a lead screw for the tool slide.
