[Also in Group XXIV] In a metal-cutting machine having a tool carriage L fed on a saddle T by a rotating shaft A, a clutch 3 permits starting and stopping of the movement of the carriage, the clutch being such that it may be engaged and disengaged without stopping the shaft A whilst retaining the correct longitudinal position of the carriage in relation to the rotation of the shaft A. The clutch may be controlled manually or automatically by mechanical, electrical, hydraulic or pneumatic means. For a screw-cutting lathe, the clutch 3 couples a shaft 1 driven by gears P, R, from the shaft A with a shaft 2 driving a cam C through gearing D, E, the cam engaging a follower G on the carriage L. A sleeve 4, Fig. 2, splined to the shaft 1 has a dog 29 engageable with recesses 33, 32 in a sleeve 11 fixed to the shaft 2 and in a freely rotatable bush 6 carrying a planet pinion 8 respectively. Pinion 8 meshes continuously with a pinion 5 fixed to the shaft 1 and with internal-teeth 13 on the sleeve 11. Engagement can only occur when the recesses 32, 33 are in alignment. When the clutch is disengaged and the sleeve 11, shaft 2 and cam C are stationary, the planet 8 and bush 6 will rotate, and re-engagement will not be possible until the shaft 1 has completed a predetermined number of revolutions. The clutch is enclosed in a cylinder 17 having a piston 21. A spring 26 effects clutch-engagement, and fluid-pressure admitted to a chamber 30 acts on the piston 21 for disengagement.
