Abstract
596,022. Actuating machines. ARCHDALE & CO., Ltd., J., and WRIGHT, W. July 13, 1945, No. 18004. [Class 83 (iii)] In a nut and screw traversing-mechanism, a driving-shaft is angularly displaceable relative to a coaxial driven-shaft, clutching means responsive to the driving-shaft either securing the driven-shaft against rotation or allowing it to rotate with the driving-shaft. The feedscrew a, Fig. 1, is rotated by a motor k through gearing i and j for the machining feed, the nut d being held against rotation by a clutch s. For rapid traverse the motor g breaks the clutch s and rotates the nut through the gearing f. The driving-shaft m, Fig. 2, has frictional-clutch teeth v interacting with recesses u in a sleeve o slidably mounted on the driven shaft n, the two shafts being coaxial, clutch-teeth s on the sleeve engaging a stationary member t under spring-pressure. Initial rotation of the shaft m displaces the sleeve o axially until disengagement of the clutch s has been affected, whereupon the drive is transmitted to the sleeve r by the dog-clutch q, the gear f being integral with the sleeve keyed to the shaft n. The drive from the clutch-teeth v is made positive by the sleeve r limiting the axial displacement of the sleeve.
