Abstract

980,843. Sootblowers. P. M. WILSON. Nov. 11, 1963 [Nov. 10, 1962], No. 42561/62. Heading F2N. A long-stroke sootblower has a steam feedtube 11 fixedly mounted coaxially with and inside a lance-tube 12 mounted in a casing 10, a stuffing-box 25 at the outer end of the lance tube to form a steam-tight joint between the tubes, means for moving the lance axially and for rotating it, a steam supply-valve 16 adjacent the inner end of the casing with a conduit 45 connecting it to the feed-tube 11 and means for controlling operation of the valve. A carriage 13 has wheels 19 which run along rails 18 on the casing 10 and wheels 20 which engage the side of the casing. A support 26 is carried on the carriage 13 to steady the feed-tube 11 when the lance is extended. An electric motor 14 drives the carriage 13 to and fro through a gear-box 31, sprocket wheels 32 and chains 33 to move the lance tube axially. A motor 15 rotates the lance tube by way of a gear 42, sprockets 38- 41, a chain 37 and worm-gear 35, 36. The wheels 20 engage switches 43 and 44 to limit travel of the lance. The valve 16 is controlled by a system of levers 46 terminating in a cranked member 46 with a slot 47 at its free end which cooperates with a projection 49 on the carriage. An additional tube may be provided inside the lance to supply slurry or water as well as the steam from the feed-tube 12.
