Abstract
106,273. Nordstrom, E. Aug. 31, 1915, [Convention date]. ' Crown corks ' and the like, applying.-In apparatus for making bottle-caps and applying them to bottles or other vessels, the cork inserts 152, Fig. 11, are fed one at a time from the bottom of a shoot 151 by a slide 149 into the path of a plunger 153, and, after receiving a cork from the plunger 153, the cap is brought by a rotary table 114 over the mouth of a bottle 166, Fig. 4. The bottle is held by pivoted grippers 167 provided with arms 168, Fig. 3, which are geared together and one of which is carried by a sleeve 169 having an arm operated by a cam. The cap-applying plunger 203 is actuated by a lever 205 and rod 207 connected by a lost-motion coupling 208 to a rod 209 operated by the lever 107. If a bottle is not presented to the capping-mechanism, a feeler 173 at the lower end of a rod 174 is moved inwards by a spring and an arm 175 disengages the pawl 66 from the shoulder 69, thereby throwing the cap-constructing mechanism out of gear The bottles &c. are fed one at a time to the capping-mechanism, and the capped bottles are fed in pairs to the crimping-mechanism. The crimp. ing-head is carried by a slide 217, Figs. 3 and 17, reciprocated in a guide 218 by a cam 214 on a shaft 213 driven by bevel-gearing from the shaft 58, Fig. 4. The spring-pressed crimping-elements 228, Fig. 12, project through radial slots in a spring-pressed slide 222 carried by a rod 224 which passes through the upper end of a socket 221 carried by the slide 217. An adjustable nut 225 limits the downward movement of the rod 224. When the socket descends, the member 227 rests on the cap on the bottle, and when the slide 222 is brought to rest, the spring-pressed plungers 232 are forced down on to the elements 228 causing them to turn about their rounded lugs 229 and crimp the cap. The bottle-clamping levers 236 carried by the guide 218 are normally drawn together in pairs by springs 237, and are provided with interengaging segmental arms 238. Lugs 239 projecting from the front lever of each pair are engaged simultaneously by a bar 240 connected by straps 241 to the slide 217. The means for feeding cork inserts described in Specification 106,272 may be used in the machine. Specification 101,351 is referred to.
