Abstract
646,552. Shaping bottle closures. FORD, G. E., and FORDS (FINSBURY), Ltd. June 12, 1948, No. 15900. [Class 100 (ii)] [Also in Group XVII] The cap-making portion of a bottle capping machine (see Group XVII), wherein caps 84 are formed from a strip of metal foil 41 fed therethrough, includes a manually or power-driven shaft 8 movement of which in opposite directions, within limits, operates the cap-forming and strip-feeding mechanisms respectively. The maximum counterclock movement of the shaft 8 causes the die 16 to move as a whole to the left along guides until a ring 116 (slidable against a spring 117 relatively to the rest of the die) pushes the strip against the cylindrical member 100 of the punch 19. The remainder of the die continues to move until the pressure plate 113 (slidable against springs 115 relatively to the rest of the die) presses the strip against the stationary shear ring 106. Shear ring 107 and plate 118 carrying a pressure pad 119 continue to advance ; shear rings 106, 107 coact to cut out the disc from which the cap is to be formed and shear ring 107 now forces back an ejector ring 108 against a spring 111 thereby forming the cap over the exterior periphery of the cylinder 100 whilst the pressure pad 119 coacts with an embossed member 101, removably carried by the cylinder 100, to form the wording &c. on the top. On clockwise movement of the shaft 8 the die and punch are reset and the formed cap is ejected and passes down a shoot 80. Clockwise movement of the shaft 8 to an extent limited by a stop 78 positively moves an arm 62 against a spring 68 clockwise, the arm carrying a spring-pressed one-way latch 63 operatively engaging (in the clockwise direction) one of a number of abutments 61 on the end of a gear wheel 59 thereby rotating the feed rollers 50, 51 for the metal strip. Counterclock movement of shaft 8 permits the spring 68 to swing the arm 62 counterclock, withdraw the latch from driving engagement with one abutment 61 and reengage it with another abutment ready for positively driving it on the next clockwise movement of the shaft. The maximum counterclock movement of arm 62 is less than and is completed before the full counterclock movement of shaft 8 whereby, if this shaft is not given its full stroke counterclock, oscillation of the shaft will feed the strip only, without actuating the die and punch.
