[Class 138 (ii)] The head 2 of an ironing- press is mounted on a carriage 19 and is drawn forward manually into registration with the buck 1. The head is lowered into pressing engagement with the buck by the manuallycontrolled rotation of a shaft 28 journalled in the carriage and carrying an eccentrically disposed roller 31 which coacts with a rib 32 formed on the head. When in the pressing position the eccentric roller is past dead centre position and in order to prevent a too rapid separating movement of the press members and of the lever which rotates the shaft 28 on release of the latter a speed responsive clutch is arranged between the shaft and the carriage. The clutch comprises a cylindrical surface 43, Fig. 5, secured to the carriage within which the shaft rotates. The latter is formed with a wedge-shaped recess 45 in which a ball 46 is housed. A pin 47 projects from the shaft into the recess. When the shaft is rotated clockwise from the inoperative position shown in full lines to the pressing position shown in dotted lines, the pin moves the ball upwardly. On release of the pressure the shaft rotates counterclockwise and the pin tends to run away from the ball which then becomes wedged and slows up the movement of the shaft. The pressure exerted is adjusted by rotation of a screwed pin 9 into or out of a threaded socket in the under surface of the buck, a coil spring 11 being provided around the pin 9. The head is guided in its vertical movement by ears 40 which engage the shaft 28.
