Abstract

651,030. Hose couplings. MELSOM, W. A., and BOWDEN (ENGINEERS), Ltd. June 25, 1948, No. 17219. [Class 99(i)] The end portion 4 of reinforcement 3 is bared and gripped between outwardly tapering or conical surfaces 8, 21 of a fitting comprising an insert 5 and a sleeve 10, the sleeve having an end wall 11 to prevent outward movement of the insert and any associated gripping part. The sleeve has a thickened band 20 and a shoulder 18 which is disposed behind a rib 7 on the insert so that on swaging the sleeve the reinforcement 4 will be wedged and kinked against the rib. A nipple 12 is mounted on the sleeve or, in a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown) on the insert. In this modification also, the sleeve may be swaged to and interlocked with the insert which has a progressively thickened cone portion. In further modifications, Figs. 4-8 (not shown), the reinforcement may be gripped b6tween a ring encircling the insert and the sleeve and/or a band interposed between the sleeve and the reinforcement. In such cases the rib 7 may be formed on the ring or on the insert and the ring may have a recess to engage a collar on the insert. The coupling may be applied to hoses having two or more reinforcing layers, the ring may be of more ductile material than the sleeve or insert and the band 20 may be a separate ring.
