740,754. Hose couplings. BRITISH TYRE & RUBBER CO., Ltd., and BEAZLEY, T. A. Dec. 7, 1953 [Sept. 9, 1952], No. 22652/52. Class 99(1). An end fitting for a hose of the kind comprising inner and outer rubber &c., layers 21, 13 and an intermediate braided wire or like rein. forcement 16 comprises a body part 10 having a tapered annular projection 12 extending between the reinforcement and the inner layer, a sleeve 25 having a correspondingly tapered bore, and an insert 18 which forms with the projection 12 a recess 20 for the reception of the inner layer. The sleeve is screw-threaded at 17 for reception of the body, and its tapered bore may be formed by a coarse thread 26. Alternatively the tapered bore may be smooth or serrated, and it may be formed on a separate part carried within the sleeve. The sleeve is first applied to the hose, and the body and insert are then screwed into it. The insert, which may be integral with or secured to the body, has a shallow groove 22 and an air escape hole 23 to facilitate reception of the inner layer within the recess 20. Alternatively a separate insert is first pushed some distance into the hose and is drawn back to compress the inner layer against the projection 12 after the sleeve and body have been applied to the hose. In all forms the insert may be expanded after the fitting is assembled.
