Abstract

692,787. Hose end fittings. BOWDEN (ENGINEERS), Ltd. June 8, 1951 [April 6, 1950; March 22, 1951], Nos. 8759/50 and 6846/51. Class 99 (i). A hose coupling component for a hose having an embedded reinforcement 3 includes an end fitting 9 having a sleeve portion 8 and an internal, annular, axial projection 11, the end of the hose being bared to the reinforcement which is separated from the inner hose layer 1, passed through and bent back over a ring 5, and gripped between sleeve and ring. The projection 11 extends between the reinforcement and the inner hose layer which is held against the bore 12 of the fitting by an insert 15. The bore 12 is conical, or partly conical and partly cylindrical. The inner hose layer 1 is cut or ground to fit the bore 12. The insert 15 may be a close-coiled, squaresection spring, or it may be a rigid tube which has lateral openings or an outer portion of reduced diameter to allow fluid pre.ssure to act on the inner layer 1. The spring insert may have a rigid sleeve on its inner end. The sleeve 8 and annulus 11 may be separate from the fitting 9. The sleeve 8 and ring 5 are contracted on to the hose by swaging. In a modification the ring 5a, Fig. 4 has an outer end of semi-circular cross-sectional profile and a conical bore diverging towards its thin inner end. The fitting 9a has a complementary recess. When contracted the ring has a cylindrical form 5b parallel with the annular projection 11a. The cylindrical bore 12a of the fitting is in two parts joined by a shoulder 23. In a further modification an externally tapered ring 29, Fig. 5 clamps the reinforcement 3 against the tapered bore 27 of the fitting by a nut 30 screwing on to the fitting. The nut may screw into the fitting, and may, in addition, have a tapered projection engaging a tapered bore of the ring. If the hose has more than one tubular reinforcement the hose end is bared to the inner reinforcement. Alternatively all layers are removed except the outer reinforcement and the inner rubber layer. A supplementary ring may be located between the sleeve 8 and the reinforcement. If the latter is non-metallic the sleeve 8, ring 5, and supplementary ring are of soft metal. Specification 540,490 is referred to.
