742,686. Hose couplings. DUNLOP RUBBER CO., Ltd., and BULMER, C. G. July 23, 1954 [Aug. 6, 1953], No. 21692/53 Class 99(1). In a coupling for a flexible hose 1 comprising an inner tubular insert 10 and an outer sleeve 6 adapted to clamp between them one end of the hose 1, the insert 10 comprising an inner cylindrical portion 14 to fit the hose bore and having an outwardly extending projection 16 to constitute a sealing zone within the hose, the insert is provided with a separate or integral outer cylindrical portion 15 fitting within a cylindrical slit 5 in the hose 1 to constitute a second sealing zone. The outer periphery of the rubber or rubber-like hose 1 is ground to ensure concentricity with the sleeve 6, and the end of the re-inforcing layer 2, which may be canvas lined, is exposed. When the end fitting is assembled with the projections 16 firmly engaged in the bore of the hose 1 and the portion 15 in the slit 5, the sleeve is swaged inwardly to compress the hose between the sleeve 6 and the extension 14, and to lock the exposed portion of the layer 2 between a sleeve flange 8 and a part 11 of the insert 10. The insert 10 includes a nipple 12 and an associated nut 13. Specification 581,180 is referred to.
