[Class 100 (ii)] An impression cylinder for a rotary printing- machine is constructed with an outer covering 22 formed of resilient packing material comprising one or more layers of rubber, plastic composition, or layers of paper, secured together by cementing &c. or by vulcanization, and secured also to curved rigid metal backing plates 30 which are detachably connected to the body 18 of the cylinder, and which fit together so as to form a substantially continuous impression surface. The junction between the layers of packing 22 may be rough or corrugated to ensure a good bond, but the outer layer is smooth and of constant radius. The plates 30 are provided with fastening means, which hold the plates edge-to-edge and which comprise fingers 32, 34 arranged in recesses 36, 38 in the body 18, and formed with hook-like ends 32a, 34a which engage under-cut grooves 40, 42 at the ends of the plates. Springs 44, 46 urge the fingers 32, 34 to locking position, and the fingers can be withdrawn by turning their shafts 48, 50 by means of a wrench engaging the. square ends of the shafts. More than two. plates 30 may be used, and in some cases only one. Similar clamping means may be used to clamp the printing-plates in position. By the use of the device it is stated that first impression offset is prevented or minimized, creeping of the packing is prevented, as is smudging of impressions. The plates 30 may be of steel.
