Abstract

982,061. Offset printing. CONTINENTAL CAN CO. Inc. Oct. 22, 1963 [Dec. 12, 1962], No. 41702/63. Heading B6C. An offset cylinder 5, receiving inked impressions from a relief printing-cylinder and transferring the impressions to the surface of a plastic container 14 rotated in synchronism with the cylinder 5, has print-transferring segments 6 of an elastically-yieldable material, e.g. rubber or artificial rubber, which is substantially thicker and softer than the conventional offset blanket and transfers the impressions without smearing despite differences between the surface speeds of the article and blanket where they contact one another. The material of the segments 6 have a Shore durometer hardness of 15-40 durometer, preferably within the range of 30-35 durometer, as compared with a Shore durometer hardness of 70-75 for a conventional blanket. Each segment has a thickness of “ inch to <SP>17</SP>/ 32 inch preferably approximately half an inch, the thickness of a conventional blanket being 0.065 inches. Each segment may be formed of laminated material with layers differing in hardness but having the same overall hardness as the unlaminated material. The arrangement may be applied to an existing offset machine by reducing the diameter of its blanket cylinder and applying segments of the form described.
