Abstract

Printing powder is deposited from a supply hopper, as by the aid of a brush, on to an intaglio printing-cylinder so as to fill the design cavities, surplus being removed by a reversed doctor blade. An electrostatic charge is applied to the powder in the cavities, and the powder is then transferred by the application of an electrostatic field by corona wires or a high-voltage impression roller to an article such as a sheet of paper, a board to be printed with a wood grain pattern, or a hot glass bottle, and then fixed to the article. Powder remaining in the cells is loosened by a brush rotating at a greater speed than the cylinder. The doctor blade may be replaced by a rotary rubber doctor, and powder may be loosened by air jets. The powder is a mixture of resinous material and colouring material, of size 11-18 microns.
