Abstract

Tension in a web 9 which passes through a succession of printing couples is controlled by passing it, downstream of each printing couple, over a roller 25 whose peripheral speed is less than the speed of the web 9, so that the web 9 slips relative to the roller surface, Registration of images produced by the printing couples is thus facilitated. Each printing couple may comprise a plate cylinder or engraved cylinder 22 and an impression cylinder 24, or a blanker cylinder and an impression cylinder and the plate or engraved cylinder 22 may be inked by dipping in trough 23.
